about

Fabel is a collection of traditional Norwegian folk songs that contain stories, both symbolic and epic. Here are medieval ballads, broadside ballads, humoristic, bawdy ballads, and ballads of love and chivalry. Lyrics are concerned with the human condition – with strength, weakness, love, jealousy, transformation and disguise.

The melodies are chosen primarily from traditions in regions of southeastern Norway, bordering with Sweden (Hedmark and Østfold). They have variants in traditions of regions Telemark, Gudbrandsdalen, as
well as Sweden. Several of the ballads are also known in other Nordic countries. These melodies and lyrics have wandered with people from place to place through the centuries. The stories and songs have been formed and interpreted in various ways, as they have taken root here and there and been sung for comfort and joy through many generations.

I have been working with this material for some time and felt that it was time to present this selection of songs that I find meaningful. I have given them my own style and my dialect. Sigurd Hole has arranged the music in accordance with his jazz landscape. The songs have thus been given their own musical expression in the meeting between past and present.
